What time should I go to bed if I wake up at 8:30 am?

For a 8:30 am alarm, the best bedtime for most adults is 12:45 am (five 90-minute cycles, 7.5 hours of sleep) or 11:15 pm (six cycles, 9 hours). Both include 15 minutes to fall asleep.

Your night, going to bed at 12:45 am

Amber ticks mark cycle ends. The fifth ends at 8:30 am, so the alarm catches you in light sleep rather than deep N3 sleep.

How we worked it out

Start at 8:30 am, subtract whole 90-minute sleep cycles, then subtract the 15 minutes most adults take to fall asleep. Five cycles: 8:30 am − 7 h 30 min − 15 min = 12:45 am.

Adults need 7 or more hours (AASM/Sleep Research Society), so five or six cycles are the targets. Teenagers need 8–10 hours, so six cycles suits them best: lights out by 11:15 pm.

Questions people ask

What time should I go to bed if I wake up at 8:30 am?

12:45 am for five sleep cycles (7.5 hours) or 11:15 pm for six (9 hours), allowing 15 minutes to fall asleep.

What time should a teenager go to bed to wake up at 8:30 am?

Teens need 8–10 hours, so aim for lights out around 11:15 pm, which gives six full cycles.

Is going to bed at 2:15 am OK for a 8:30 am alarm?

It gives four cycles, about 6 hours of sleep. That ends on a cycle boundary, but it is below the 7-hour minimum recommended for adults, so keep it occasional.

What if I can't fall asleep that early?

Shift your bedtime earlier by 15 minutes every few nights, get daylight soon after waking and dim the lights in the evening. Keep the alarm the same every day.
